xR² Lab

– extended reality and robotics


Extended Reality and Robotics Lab – abbreviated to xR² Lab – is a research and development environment where we work with the application of virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality – collectively known as extended reality – in teaching, training and robotics.



When technology meets people

Established in 2018, xR² Lab is a research and development environment focusing on immersive technologies, robotics and human-computer interaction. We explore how these technologies can be developed and applied to address real-world challenges and create new opportunities for innovation in collaboration with researchers, students and companies.

Since its establishment, the lab has hosted several PhD projects, postdoctoral projects and research stays, contributing to talent development and international research collaborations. We have also received funding from national funding bodies for applied and experimental research within the lab’s areas of expertise.

At xR² Lab, researchers, students and external partners work together to develop prototypes, test technologies and explore their potential in a variety of contexts.

Research in practice

Our research combines scientific methods with experimentation and technological testing. Our work includes:

  • VR for learning and training, where virtual environments support learning and skills development.
  • Remote control of robots (teleoperation), where we investigate safe and intuitive interaction between humans and robots at a distance.
  • Haptic technologies and force-control systems that provide users with physical and tactile feedback.
  • Biometrically supported immersive environments, where data is used to investigate human behaviour, engagement and performance.
  • Human-computer interaction and immersion, where we investigate interaction design and user experiences.
  • AI-supported XR, where artificial intelligence expands the potential applications of immersive technologies.



Equipment and technology


xR² Lab has facilities and technological equipment that enable the development, testing and demonstration of new XR solutions. We support the entire process, from initial ideas and design through development and testing to early-stage pilot projects.


Collaboration and networking


The lab is used by engaged students and researchers as well as industry practitioners. In addition, the lab is part of a growing national and international research network, strengthened through:

  • collaboration with PhD students and international visiting researchers
  • applied research in collaboration with companies
  • publicly funded research and innovation projects supported by national funding bodies
