In the fall of 2009, AU Herning graduated the first class of the MSc programme in engineering (also known as the cand.polyt. in Technology Based Business Development), and over the course of these last three years, AU Herning has sent 100 engineers out into the world. Civil engineer no. 100 was Steffen Isgreen Sørensen, who achieved a top mark at his final exam. After the oral defence of his Master’s thesis, he was taken by surprise by the management at AU Herning, who showered him with flowers and wine.

- The best thing about the MSc programme in engineering at AU Herning is the strong link between theory and practice. For the last two years, we, the students, have each been affiliated with a mentor company, where we have been working three days a week - and then, on the days where we didn’t go to ‘work,’ we went to class at AU Herning. It has been awesome to be able to get real business experience and do a degree at the same time, says Steffen Isgreen Sørensen.

- It is always nice to be able to send our students out into the world with a successfully completed degree, and it is inspiring to see how accomplished and determined they are, says Michael Evan Goodsite, Head of Department at AU Herning.

Newly graduated and director of his own company

While Steffen Isgreen Sørensen studied engineering at AU Herning, he also started his own company, as did many of his fellow students. He and a friend from his class founded the company APP Afbudsrejser, a mobile platform that provides an online overview of all cancellation holiday offers available. After only a year, their app has 90,000 users.

- The inspiration to form the company came in class. What is special about studying at AU Herning is that, as a student, you have the opportunity to work very closely with the teachers. It has been a very useful and instructive experience to be able to draw on their vast knowledge and experience both related to theory and practice, says Steffen Isgreen Sørensen.
