EngTech

  • Engineering & Technology

EngTech (Engineering & Technology) is an interdisciplinary research group at the Department of Business Development and Technology (BTECH), Aarhus University, Herning.

The research of EngTech focuses on technology, technological functionalities and engineering with a view to creating new opportunities for private companies and public organisations.

The research revolves around technology as a starting point for change and technology in an application perspective. The group often works with technology in a life-cycle perspective from idea and design to production and operations.

Research focus

The scientific backbone of the EngTech research group is to pursue research within engineering, technological artifacts, sociotechnical systems, information technology and mathematical modeling in order to:

  1. Combine a large number of data from experiments with (applied) science for understanding the processes in scientific and engineering problems.
  2. Design science research (understanding, analysing, systematising frameworks to determine the design of technological development).
  3. Map analytical tools to understand technologies in companies and society from a technical perspective; e.g., digital capabilities as a prerequisite for integration and efficiency, mechanical engineering capabilities as an enabler for production configuration.
  4. Apply an open approach to technology in the context of changes and the ability to support diversity with combinations of existing and novel technologies into new opportunities.
  5. Examine engineering management processes with a particular focus on governance of technical development and operations processes in the view of support of complex and changing technologies in companies.
  6. Ensure the involvement of relevant organisational and economic aspects in concrete design, implementation and operation of technology solutions.

Objectives

Visions

The main visions of the EngTech research group are to:

  1. Contribute/support the engineering study programmes at BTECH/AU with research-based teaching. In particular, to constitute the major research foundation for the MSc in Engineering study programme (cand.polyt.).
  2. Become an attractive research project partner for national and international research groups.
  3. Support private companies and public institutions with technology and socio-technological solutions.
  4. Profiling and positioning the engineering education in the business community in Denmark and among students in national and international environments.
  5. Create a vibrant environment for the talent development of final-stage MSc students, PhD students, postdocs and assistant professors.

The research group vision is to connect these five visions in a lab for engineering and technology where researchers and students can interact and collaborate.

History

The EngTech research group held its first formal meeting 1 October 2015. Prior to this, the group's members had collaborated on engineering research activities for at least five years.

The main reason for forming a formal research group was an intention to strenghten:

  • The members' research activities
  • The research support for the engineering study programmes at the department.
